Unexpectedly landing a job in the field of adoption

Lori CraigLori Craig is Adoption STAR’s Executive Assistant, and an important player in all the “behind the scenes” work that goes into making our agency run smoothly. Lori holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and her previous work experience was all based in higher education (as she worked at both Purdue University and the State University of New York at Buffalo). The twists and turns that our professional life can take are typically quite difficult to predict, but have the potential to be incredibly rewarding. The following post, written by Lori, is a true testament to this!

While I never envisioned myself working in the field of adoption, I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so here at Adoption STAR. I feel this way for many reasons, including:

  • I’ve never encountered a workplace so filled with dedicated people, all rallying around and supporting families as they go about their adoption journeys;
  • The prospective adoptive families are eager and excited to learn all they can about adoption and the services provided by our agency, just as I was when I started working as a new employee;

However, my most valued opportunity in working at an adoption agency is meeting the wonderful women who become birthmothers and supporting them by simply visiting, talking, and laughing with them at various agency events.

I often describe my employment by saying, “I am not a social worker, but I’m surrounded by them!” I’ve learned so much from the staff, the adoptive parents, and the birthmothers…much of which I carry with me into my life.
