Adoption STAR will continue to fight for married, same-sex adoptive parents that are adversely affected by this ruling.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) issued a statement yesterday: “In an outrageous ruling, two judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit upheld bans on marriage equality in four states: Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. Same-sex marriage bans will REMAIN in these four states. This is the first time since the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013 that a court at this level has decided to uphold marriage discrimination.”
Adoption STAR learned the news via email when one of our attorneys sent us the ruling with this sentiment: “I am in shock … How embarrassing it is today to live in Ohio!”
Even with this set back, Adoption STAR will continue to be involved in a lawsuit requiring Ohio to place the names of both married same-sex parents of the birth certificates of their children. See this article for more information on the lawsuit.
How can you help? Spread the word about the fact that children have the right for both their parents to be on their birth certificates! And help support the HRC as more work needs to be done: click HERE to donate.
