You have heard throughout your life to avoid alcohol when you’re pregnant, and that is very important to remember, as no level of alcohol has been proved safe during pregnancy. It is also important to stay away from caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and cola, as caffeine has the potential to speed up your unborn child’s heart rate or slow its fetal growth.
Nutrients that you want to make sure are in your diet include folate, calcium, protein and iron. Please read the full section on pregnancy nutrition on the Adoption STAR website to get a full overview of what to add to your diet and what to avoid.
