Adoption Poetry: Deciding to Adopt a Second Time

The adoption journey can be a roller coaster of emotions for all involved, and because of this, there are many great pieces of art reflecting adoption. Here is a poem from an adoptive mother,Jill Work, on her family’s experience going through the adoption journey a second time.

Poem for a Son-to-be

We said

We’re starting on a second adoption

They said

So soon? Is that wise?

– but they didn’t know

you were waiting for us…

We said

This time we want a boy

They said

Girls are easier to raise

– but they didn’t know

you were waiting for us…

We said

We want a toddler

They said

It’s better to adopt an infant

– but they didn’t know

you were waiting for us…

They said

But how can you afford to?

We said

But how can we afford *not* to,

– since we know

you are waiting for us…

Now we need only find out who-

and where-

you are

So that you

and we

need wait no more.
